Gion and Higashiyama—lanes full of charm, lively streets, and historic shrines and temples. SOWAKA sits in a sought-after area where Kyoto’s sense of miyabi (refined grace) feels especially vivid. Major sights are within walking distance, yet the hotel offers a quiet retreat from the bustle. Enjoy a fulfilling stay in the ancient capital where atmosphere and ease live in balance.

We trust in the finest ingredients and express their appeal with clarity and honesty—delivering a sense of awe that surpasses what words can promise, and inviting you into the free, beautiful world of Japanese cuisine as expressed at Gion Roka.

We shape a bespoke journey around your interests and tastes, and help you create memories that last.
The main building, alive with a century-old sukiya from a legendary restaurant, and the new wing with a modern Japanese sensibility. Each guest room at SOWAKA is composed with a sukiya spirit—pursuing what you love. In rooms of differing character, the aesthetic left by those who came before merges with a fresh contemporary eye. Playful, unconstrained spaces free mind and body. Enjoy a stay of unprecedented luxury where hotel comfort and Japanese beauty meet.

Main building — Higashiyama view
Wherever you are in the room, you sense the garden’s breathtaking presence. Sit on the engawa veranda, and the wind in the trees and the sound of water quiet the mind, while ancient trees lend their vitality. Here, nature and architecture seem to dissolve into one another. In the hush of night, enjoy deep calm and time richly spent, as if you and the garden were one.

A refined two-story guest room with the tea room Bosen on the first floor. Earthen walls and masterful bamboo lattice work speak quietly of traditional Japanese aesthetics. After a soak in the hinoki bath, cool off in a small room overlooking the garden. We promise moments wrapped in the stillness that only authenticity can offer.

A luxurious space with a spacious veranda overlooking a private garden reminiscent of a Zen rock garden. In the room, water patterns on sliding doors and aged transom details blend old and new design beautifully.

Sit back on the engawa and turn your eyes to the scene beyond the glass—a place unique to this room, with a full view of SOWAKA’s main garden. Listen to the wind in the trees and pass the hours in quiet, feeling the light of the season. Savor the luxury of stillness to your heart’s content.
The garden view suite requires an additional fee.

New wing — Garden-view open-air bath & tatami
The new wing’s beautiful cedar-grain façade respects privacy to the utmost, with a layout where guest rooms never adjoin one another. The approach, set back from the shared corridor, feels like walking a Kyoto back alley. A world apart from uniform hotels—quiet, yet full of playful spirit. In a private residence shaped by today’s craft and taste, we promise relaxation from the heart.

Bright light pours through full-height windows into an open, airy room. Greenery spreads before you, with borrowed views of the main building’s treetops beyond. The raised tatami bed platform is a place of ease for bare feet. Relax completely, wrapped in light and green.

The star of this room is the semi-outdoor bath facing your private garden. Soak while you watch the green change with the seasons and listen for birdsong, then step into a serene bedroom where the lighting is artfully composed. In this carefully designed space, feel mind and body slowly let go.
