Become an owner, and give back to the Tottori you love.
TOTTORI-JAPAN
Own a piece of the Tottori Sand Dunes rakkyo field.
What is TOTTORI OWNERSHIP?

TOTTORI OWNERSHIP is a new kind of experience: become the "owner" of the crops that make Tottori famous, from rakkyo to shiitake mushrooms. You get to be part of the journey, from cultivation to harvest.
Day-to-day growing is entirely in the hands of local producers. No experience or knowledge required — anyone can become an owner.
Tottori is best known for the Sand Dunes, but it's also a thriving agricultural region. Its rich natural environment nurtures an abundance of high-quality produce.
But a shrinking farming population and rising costs are making it harder to keep that tradition alive. TOTTORI OWNERSHIP was born from a simple wish: to give more people a reason to discover Tottori, through hands-on farming and a taste of its food culture.
The Rakkyo Field Ownership gives you your very own small plot within a rakkyo field on the Tottori Sand Dunes. As an owner, you're free to visit during the planting and harvest seasons, get your hands in the soil, and enjoy watching your crop grow. Everything you harvest is yours to take home. If it's more than you can carry, the producer will buy back the surplus.
Touch the soil, grow it, dig it up. You can spend time with nature in a way city life could never offer. Growing and harvesting with your own hands — a genuine experience.
A direct connection with the producers who work the Tottori Sand Dunes helps protect the region's farming and food culture. Even a small connection can shape Tottori's future.
Can't make it in person? The producer will handle the planting and harvesting for you, and ship your rakkyo straight to your door. Distance is never a reason to miss out.

The Appeal of Tottori Sand Dunes Rakkyo & the Harvest Experience

"Tottori Dune rakkyo" is a branded rakkyo grown around the Tottori Sand Dunes, boasting Japan's largest production. Growing on the slopes of the national-park Tottori Sand Dunes, its crisp texture and refined sweetness are born precisely from the well-draining sand. Certified as a Geographical Indication (GI) protected product, it is a specialty Tottori takes pride in — with a taste and aroma unique to this place that nowhere else can reproduce.

Growing in well-drained sandy soil tightens the bulb's moisture content, giving it that fine-fibered, crisp bite. As a signature crop of the region, it's registered under Japan's Geographical Indication (GI) protection system.

From late October to early November, rakkyo bursts into delicate lavender blooms. Watching the dune's slopes turn a sea of purple is a sight unique to this brief season. While you wait for harvest time, you're welcome to visit and see it for yourself, any time.

What you dig up is rakkyo grown in your own plot. The feel of pulling it out roots and all is something you can't get from simply picking it off a shelf. The sense of achievement of holding a bulb you dug up yourself, alongside the producer, is an owner's privilege.

The harsh environment of the Tottori Sand Dunes is exactly what firms up the rakkyo bulbs and gives them their signature crisp snap. A freshly dug bulb is nothing like the usual pickles — a translucent white with a crunchy, crisp bite.
If you can't visit in person, we ship it "freshly dug" — sand still on it, roots and stems left uncut. Because rakkyo loses freshness the moment it is cut, keeping it whole seals in all its juiciness.

Rakkyo is so nutritious it is called "the field's medicine." Its dietary fiber "fructan" and fatigue-recovery compound "allicin" support gut health and immunity. Aim for 3–4 bulbs a day, ideally before meals.

Freshly dug, it is delicious raw — the crisp texture and refreshing sharpness are unique to eating it fresh. Sweet-vinegar pickles, soy-sauce pickles, tsukudani, and more bring color to your table every day. The slow wait as it matures while pickling is a pleasure only rakkyo offers.
Voices of the producers
A producer who has spent years growing rakkyo on the Tottori Sand Dunes. Well-drained sand cuts both ways — it also means poor nutrients and moisture, making it a genuinely difficult place to farm. Working with that environment, tending each plant by hand, they've kept the nation's top quality alive. Your plot, too, is watched over daily by this expert eye and hand.

Faced with the challenge of a declining number of producers, we wanted to start by opening up the fields and letting many people experience them. This ownership was born from that wish.
Rakkyo cultivation in this area began decades ago. The know-how of working with the harsh sand has been passed down across the generations.
